While Barossa Valley Brewing calls the lush tranquil landscape of Chateau Yaldara in the Barossa home, our Brewery was conceived on more distant and hectic shores. Our genesis was the cut-throat arena of international equity finance. Myself (Denham) and Fergus (investor), worked for rival international banking firms in the financial hotspots of New York, London, Hong Kong and Tokyo. While investment banking has its perks, I never felt as if it was my true calling. I yearned to do something which I was truly passionate about.

I heard the call to start a boutique brewery back in the early 90s while in University in the US. My first experience with American beer was disappointing. "How is it you can put a man on the moon, but can't brew a decent beer?" is a question I often posed to classmates. The entire North American continent answered in emphatic fashion by starting a boutique brewery movement. The hand crafted beer was fantastic, unlike anything I had tried and I was smitten. Much to my parents and professors chagrin I spent more time studying fermentation principles than Keynesian Economic thought. On visits home I was disappointed by lack of variety. The irony was overseas our beer was an iconic symbol of Australia, up there with Skippy and Vegemite. From very early on I felt something should be done. Read more
